International Ergonomics Association
Durante la riunione del Direttivo dell’IEA a San Diego nel luglio 2000 è stata approvata la seguente definizione dell’ergonomia: “Ergonomics (or Human Factors) is the scientific discipline concerned with the understanding of the interactions among human and other elements of a system, and the profession that applies theory, principles, data and methods to design in order to optimize human well-being and overall system performance”.

Ergonomics, or Human Factors as it is known in North America, is a branch of science that aims to learn about human abilities and limitations and then apply that knowledge to improve people’s interaction with products, systems and environments.

L’intervention ergonomique est une construction: la demande comme les réponses s’élaborent dans l’action. Situation et activité de travail sont complexes. Ces complexités recouvrent des contradictions que les acteurs sont amenés individuellement et collectivement à gérer (régulation) et à résoudre.
L’ergonomie peut alors être définie comme: “l’adaptation du travail à l’homme” ou plus précisément: “la mise en œuvre de connaissances scientifiques relatives à l’homme et nécessaires pour concevoir des outils, des machines et des dispositifs qui puissent être utilisés par le plus grand nombre avec le maximum de confort, de sécurité et d’efficacité”.
